March 24, 2009

A study from Denmark found that early pacifier use can lead to shorter duration of breastfeeding. This confirms something we've heard before. So if you want to use a pacifier, wait until the baby is at least 3 to 4 weeks old and breastfeeding is well-established. One benefit of pacifiers... they can decrease the risk of SIDS.
A new study found that hospital practices can influence whether moms will breastfeed, and how long they'll do so. See the storyin U.S. News & World Report. Moms who gave birth in hospitals that offered supplementation of formula or water were less likely to achieve their breastfeeding goals.
